LOVERS & FANTASIES
Solos and Duets

"Dear Daisy, Got the songs today. Blows me away! Just brilliant.
You are a coup for Festival Place. I can't wait for our date." - Gavin Farmer

It is now official! My new album LOVERS & FANTASIES will be in my hot little hands October 10th, 2004. That's when it gets back from the plant. The boys at ACCUDUB Inc. who manufactured it for me have done a wonderful job. L&F is the long awaited solos / acoustic / duets album that has been requested by so many of you over the years. Well here it is... and what a joy it was to do! Produced & Arranged by myself and Paul Benedict. George Koller joined me on bass on four songs and co-wrote and played guitar on the song "Lovers & Fantasies" and Margaret Stowe arranged and played guitars on Over The Rainbow.

Solo/duets. What a concept, it vaguely reminds me of Fraser & DeBolt. I did one of Allan Fraser's songs "Matchstick Man" which I have played for over 30 years, the guitars ring out. You can hear every note and nuance expertly recorded by Paul Benedict. The writers involved: Moi, Michael Ondaatje, George Koller, Allan H. Fraser & Yip Harburg / Harold Arlen.

This project started with Oh Mother, recorded in a swamp on an old dock 100 yds from a rock face in northern Ontario. The crickets were the rhythm of this song, the poem to Mom, an occasional loon. We canoed up there to record, Paul and Rob paddling, me in the middle my fingers cutting the silver waters, lilly pads and great blues. I was armed with all my writings for the last 4 years. they stank of the city except for this small poem to Mom. Chanting this poem on the mandolin in wilderness was the release I went up there for. The rest of the songs and overdubs were recorded at Paul's studio. The concept was back to my acoustic roots and self accompaniment. Paul kept me to it, we took our time, George & Margaret played into my soul as always and I thank them and Paul for their generosity of spirit.

This song is for you, Jacob.

  2. Log Boogie 1:58:50 Words & Music - D.M. DeBolt 1996

Daisy - guitar & vocals, George - bass

Log was crying out for a bluegrass reprieve. (see Log below)

  3. Lovers and Fantasies 5:07:38 Words - D. M. DeBolt / Music - George Koller 2002
Published by Creme Puff Sound /Small Wood Big Fire (SOCAN)
Daisy - vocal, George - guitar & bass

George had this music that he was writing on the tour bus on his wonderful new guitar. I had a lot of lyrics floating around looking for the blues...

  4. Crooked Heart Highway 3:51:30 Words - Michael Ondaatje, Music - D.M.DeBolt 1977
Published by Creme Puff Sound/ Mongrel Corp. (SOCAN)
    Daisy - guitar & vocal

Michael appeared backstage at a concert we gave at A Space when I was six months pregnant with Jacob. Later when our friendship grew he brought me this folder of poems and said " see if you can put any of these to music."

  5. Log 3:52:54 Words & Music D.M. DeBolt, Jacob DeBolt 1993
Published by Creme Puff Sound (SOCAN)
Daisy - guitar & vocals, George - bass

Written at Barry's Bay, Ontario on the way to Ottawa. Larry Stanley and my son Jacob put up the big tent for the first time. They got eaten alive as I cooked a gourmet meal on the open fire, the stars came out... the Northern Lights...the sounds of the night...

  6. Joe Christmas 3:27:07 Words - Michael Ondaatje, Music - D.M. DeBolt 1977
Published by Creme Puff Sound / Mongrel Corp. (SOCAN)
Daisy - guitar & vocal, George - bass

This is definitely a Toronto song, so a few references may mean nothing to you. But the Literary Man is quite well known in all literary circles....will he never shut up! OR SOBER UP!

  7. Prairie Love 3:43:22 Words & Music - D.M.DeBolt, Cal Bailey 1976
Published by Creme Puff Sound (SOCAN)
Daisy - guitar & vocal, Paul - prairie sounds

I wrote this song out west, I was in love/out of love, so terribly young. The Prairies, the only ones who understood. To speak of honour at that age seems to me now naive and prophetic.

  8. Matchstick Man 4:47:31 Words & Music - Allan H. Fraser 1968
Published by Twenty Twenty Pub. (SOCAN)
    Daisy - guitar & vocal

This song of Allan's I consider my own, I've played it for so long. This is the way I learned it more than 30 years ago. It is possible that I have drifted from the original.

  9. Somewhere Over The Rainbow 4:47:21 Words & Music - Yip Harburg, Harold Arlen 1939
Published by April Music Canada Ltd. (EMI)
Daisy - vocal, Margaret Stowe - Arrangement & guitars

Marg encouraged me to sing this song for a "Jackie Washington" benefit. It was like the room stopped breathing the first time we performed it. A magic sign! A mature contemplative version. This is for you Jackie!

This album is the shared vision of Paul and myself and is acoustic and (almost) solo. It started with "Oh Mother," recorded in a swamp on an old dock 100 yards from a rock face in Northern Ontario. The crickets were the rhythm of this song...the poem to Mom... an occasional loon and wood duck. We canoed up there to record, Paul and Rob paddling, me in the middle, my fingers cutting the silver waters, lilly pads and great blues. I was armed with all my writings for the last four years. They "stank" of the city except for the small poem to Mom. Chanting this on her own mandolin in the wilderness was the release I went up there for. One mic...it was so simple and pure. That's what we found ...purity of sound. The rest of the songs and overdubs were recorded at Paul's Main Street studio. I did the back up vocals the way I wanted them. No one else can sing or play what is in your head; George and Marg come pretty close though. - Daisy DeBolt   First thing is to thank the people who brought Daisy and her music to Main St. Brian Blain was the artist who formally introduced me to Daisy. Ted Cree is a friend who led me to Brian. But most of all it was my good friend Harvey Bruce. Harvey more than anyone saw the need for me to leave small town Ontario and move ahead with greater artistic opportunities available in Toronto and to set up my studio and home in an apartment in his basement . The "Main St. Sessions" began. Daisy's sessions actually started on a "getting to know each other" canoe trip in the north and later at Main St. where so much music has been sung, played and captured over the past 3 years. Main St. allowed an intimate and creative atmosphere where Daisy was free to explore her main instrument, her voice. These have been wonderful years working with not only the extraordinary talent of Daisy but working with a gal who knows what she likes and when. Thank you Daisy for this magical time. - Paul Benedict
